Last Week at the 'Geek: Beautiful Boards, Broken Boxes, and Boardgame Betting

Stop by our sister blog on Board Game Geek for a look at each day’s most interesting and informative threads from the BGG general gaming forum, August 4-13.

The Week in ‘Geek is now published every Thursday.

Alphonse and Gaston are comic strip characters famous for their unctuous courtesy: “After you, Alphonse!” “No, after you, Gaston!” In the sphere of metagaming, there are some who always want to be last, who need to go last. But that’s not always a good thing. Many games offer the choice of turn order, which adds yet another layer to developing a strategy.

Sure, going first is important in worker placements games. For me, it’s not that big of a deal. More and more games (think Russian Railroads) are trying to balance out the turn order by giving bonuses to those who don’t go first.
